Virginia’s working farms and forests, battlefields and other historic sites, natural areas, parks and rivers are critical to its economy, culture and quality of life. In 1999, the assembly and governor established the Virginia Land Conservation Foundation (VLCF) to fund protection of these resources. | Description: | The Nature Conservancy received a grant award of $262,500 for the fee simple acquisition of the 443-acre Byrds Point Tract as an addition to the existing 287-acre privately owned South Quay Natural Area Preserve. The tract supports 25 rare species and significant natural communities, provides significant frontage on the Blackwater and Nottoway Rivers, and is part of a 25-mile conservation corridor extending into North Carolina. VLCF funds were matched with funds from a North American Wetlands Conservation Act grant. |
