VLCF Funded Projects

Virginia’s working farms and forests, battlefields and other historic sites, natural areas, parks and rivers are critical to its economy, culture and quality of life. In 1999, the assembly and governor established the Virginia Land Conservation Foundation (VLCF) to fund protection of these resources. The interactive map below depicts VLCF-grant projects funded since 2000.

Description:

The Bald Knob property was a top priority for natural area acquisition in Virginia. This spectacular natural landmark in the town of Rocky Mount is distinctive for its rock outcrop vegetation and habitat for several rare species and significant natural communities. Open herbaceous vegetation and lichen-covered bedrock prevail over several acres. During the spring, the wildflower display is fantastic and many people climb the hill to enjoy the view and the solitude. Among the rarities found here is the Piedmont Fameflower, Phemeranthuspiedmontanus, which is known only from Bald Knob, two other sites in Franklin County and two sites in northern North Carolina. The low elevation mafic outcrop barrens on Bald Knob support the largest population on the Piedmont Fameflower, which is found in abundance here. Virginia Conservation Legacy Fund purchased approximately 78 acres with the assistance of the VLCF grant award of $320,585, and donated the Bald Knob property to the Department of Conservation and Recreation's Division of Natural Heritage.
