VLCF Funded Projects

Virginia’s working farms and forests, battlefields and other historic sites, natural areas, parks and rivers are critical to its economy, culture and quality of life. In 1999, the assembly and governor established the Virginia Land Conservation Foundation (VLCF) to fund protection of these resources. The interactive map below depicts VLCF-grant projects funded since 2000.

Name: Protection of Flatwoods at Piney Grove (withdrawn)
Category: Natural Area Preservation
Grant Round: FY16
Acres: 75
Locality: Sussex County
Management Agency:
Owner:
ConserveVirginia: None
Amount Awarded: $69,655.00
Applicant: The Nature Conservancy
Latitude: 36.97167904
Longitude: -77.049194
Description:

The Nature Conservancy (TNC) was awarded $69,655 in grant funding from VLCF to assist in acquiring approximately 75 forested acres adjacent to TNC's Piney Grove Preserve in Sussex County, Virginia. Acquisition by TNC would benefit two natural heritage resources: Coastal Plain Seasonal Ponds and Virginia's sole population of the federally endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker. Conservancy ownership would ensure protection of future Red-cockaded Woodpecker nesting and foraging habitat and would involve reintroduction of fire to restore pine savanna habitat for numerous fire-dependent species. The hydrology of the Seasonal Ponds and surrounding hydric soil areas would be preserved as well. The project tracts would be incorporated into Piney Grove Preserve and designated by DCR as a Natural Area Preserve system tract. This project was withdrawn.
