VLCF Funded Projects

Virginia’s working farms and forests, battlefields and other historic sites, natural areas, parks and rivers are critical to its economy, culture and quality of life. In 1999, the assembly and governor established the Virginia Land Conservation Foundation (VLCF) to fund protection of these resources. The interactive map below depicts VLCF-grant projects funded since 2000.

Name: Nottoway River Wildlife and Recreation Area (FY21 Round 2)
Category: Open Spaces and Parks
Grant Round: FY21 Round 2
Acres: 1,597
Locality: Sussex County
Management Agency: The Conservation Fund
Owner: Private
ConserveVirginia: Agriculture & Forestry, Natural Habitat & Ecosystem Diversity, Scenic Preservation
Amount Awarded: $264,500.00
Applicant: The Conservation Fund
Latitude: 36.985956
Longitude: -77.292071
Description:

With the help of a grant from VLCF, this 1,597 acre property in Sussex County provides public access to the Nottoway River and protect land for hunting, fishing, hiking, and wildlife watching. The property contains nearly 2.5 miles of frontage on the Nottoway River, a designated Virginia Scenic River and 2.5 miles of Black Branch Swamp. There are more than 220 acres of forested wetlands and more than 400 acres of bottomland hardwoods. The Conservation Fund worked with the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) to acquire this property for the creation of a new Wildlife Management Area. Over 90 percent of the property is identified as a priority in ConserveVirginia, with rankings in three different categories: Agriculture and Forestry, Natural Habitat and Ecosystem Diversity, and Scenic. The property will be restored to native longleaf pine and hardwoods to better support water quality and habitat for endangered species, such as the federally threatened Red-cockaded woodpecker. Federally endangered Roanoke logperch (Percina rex) and Dwarf wedgemussel (Alasmidonta heterodon) are found in this section of the Nottoway.
