Virginia’s working farms and forests, battlefields and other historic sites, natural areas, parks and rivers are critical to its economy, culture and quality of life. In 1999, the assembly and governor established the Virginia Land Conservation Foundation (VLCF) to fund protection of these resources. | Description: | The Conservation Fund (TCF) worked with the Va. Dept. of Wildlife Resources to acquire 1,597 acres in Sussex County for the creation of a new Wildlife Management Area. The property is protected for hunting, fishing, hiking, and wildlife watching, as well as providing public access to the Nottoway River. The property contains 2.5 miles of frontage on the Nottoway River, a designated Virginia Scenic River and 2.5 miles of Black Branch Swamp. There are 220 acres of forested wetlands and 400 acres of bottomland hardwoods. The property will be restored to native longleaf pine and hardwoods to better support water quality and critical habitat for endangered species, such as the federally threatened Red-cockaded woodpecker. This project received a VLCF FY21 Round II grant for $264,500 in the Open Spaces and Parks Category. |
