VLCF Funded Projects
Virginia’s working farms and forests, battlefields and other historic sites, natural areas, parks and rivers are critical to its economy, culture and quality of life. In 1999, the assembly and governor established the Virginia Land Conservation Foundation (VLCF) to fund protection of these resources. Capital Region Land Conservancy utilized the VLCF grant to acquire 50 acres of critically threatened battlefield land in the core area of the 1864 Battle of New Market Heights in Henrico County. An historic preservation and open-space easement held by the Va. Board of Historic Resources now protects the property’s 650 linear feet of the “New Market Line” earthworks that the US Colored Troops (USCT) seized in their victory for which 14 Medal of Honors were awarded. The county’s comprehensive plan identified the property as future “concentrated commercial” use and Preservation Virginia noted that this battlefield is one of the most threatened historic sites in Virginia. CRLC worked with local and national partners to establish an area of approximately 350 acres within the New Market Heights Battlefield to be interpreted and open for public access. Many have placed an even greater emphasis on preserving the few sites pertinent to the USCT. Several descendants of USCT enlisted men were also engaged in these preservation effort.
