Virginia’s working farms and forests, battlefields and other historic sites, natural areas, parks and rivers are critical to its economy, culture and quality of life. In 1999, the assembly and governor established the Virginia Land Conservation Foundation (VLCF) to fund protection of these resources. | Description: | The Patrick Henry Memorial Foundation placed an open-space easement held by VOF on 596 acres at Red Hill, located in Brookneal, VA. Red Hill, the home of Patrick Henry, first Governor of the Commonwealth, is open to the public year round, provides substantial outreach and education to both youth and adults, and is the site of an annual US Naturalization ceremony held on May 29th, the birthday of Patrick Henry. Additionally, the property includes Prime Farmland, first generation hardwoods, and a recently acquired/identified enslaved cemetery containing 147 identified graves. Red Hill includes numerous structures that are typical of what would have been present at the time of Patrick Henry’s death. It fronts on the State Scenic Staunton River as well as the Falling River. Red Hill was named a National Memorial in 1986 by then President Ronald W. Reagan. |
