VLCF Funded Projects

Virginia’s working farms and forests, battlefields and other historic sites, natural areas, parks and rivers are critical to its economy, culture and quality of life. In 1999, the assembly and governor established the Virginia Land Conservation Foundation (VLCF) to fund protection of these resources. The interactive map below depicts VLCF-grant projects funded since 2000.

Name: Downtown Greens Expansion Project
Category: Open Spaces and Parks
Grant Round: FY23
Acres: 56.00
Locality: City of Fredericksburg
Management Agency: Downtown Greens Inc.
Owner: Private
ConserveVirginia: None
Amount Awarded: $400,000.00
Applicant: Downtown Greens Inc.
Latitude: 38.281723
Longitude: -77.467266
Description:

Downtown Greens, Fredericksburg’s oldest community garden, conserves 56 acres of open space adjacent to Braehead Farm, the last working farm in the City of Fredericksburg. Although small in acreage, its 23 acres of active, prime farmland provide significant community benefits that include addressing the mission of Downtown Greens to produce local food that enhances nutritional security for the City’s underserved communities. The parcel shares a 1,200-foot boundary with the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park, helping buffer both Braehead Farm and the adjacent Lee Drive from encroaching industrial development. Its 30 acres of bottomland forest, wetland and vernal pool habitat help generate clean water for the nearby lower Rappahannock River, a state scenic river.
