Virginia’s working farms and forests, battlefields and other historic sites, natural areas, parks and rivers are critical to its economy, culture and quality of life. In 1999, the assembly and governor established the Virginia Land Conservation Foundation (VLCF) to fund protection of these resources. | Description: | The DWR proposes to purchase 2.6 acres for future development of public access (a boat ramp, two hand-launch sites) to Branson Cove and the Potomac River, a public ADA-accessible fishing pier, and a gravel parking area. Acquisitions that provide public water access are consistent with the DWR’s mission to connect people to the outdoors, and the intended future uses for boating access, pier-based fishing and wildlife viewing are integral components of that mission. Access to the Potomac River has been identified as a user priority in the DWR’s 2019 Boating Access Site and Facility Management Plan. The acquisition will provide new access to the Potomac River Water Trail, Potomac River Long-Distance Water Trail, and Westmoreland County Water Trail, addressing both County and regional priorities for additional public water access. It would also be included on the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail, providing access to public and private sites for wildlife viewing. |
