Virginia’s working farms and forests, battlefields and other historic sites, natural areas, parks and rivers are critical to its economy, culture and quality of life. In 1999, the assembly and governor established the Virginia Land Conservation Foundation (VLCF) to fund protection of these resources. | Description: | The 146-acre French Tract, in Shenandoah County near Strasburg, is entirely within the core and study area of the Fisher's Hill Battlefield and the study area of the Cedar Creek Battlefield. During the Battle of Fisher's Hill, Union forces met their stiffest resistance on the French Tract as they attacked the left flank of the Confederate infantry line atop what is now known as Ramseur's Hill. The French Tract saw the heaviest sustained combat of the entire battle. The Foundation purchased the property in July 2022 to save it from being developed. The property is currently used for agricultural purposes and is also heavily forested. The South Fork of Tumbling Run passes through the property, stretching over 4,000 feet. |
