Virginia’s working farms and forests, battlefields and other historic sites, natural areas, parks and rivers are critical to its economy, culture and quality of life. In 1999, the assembly and governor established the Virginia Land Conservation Foundation (VLCF) to fund protection of these resources. | Description: | This 96-acre project is located in the City of Chesapeake along the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River. Most of the property is designated as “Suburban Mixed Use” with a portion designated as “Conservation” future land use. Although the property is zoned primarily M-3 (Waterfront Industrial District), M-2 (General Industrial District), and a small amount R-15 (Residential District), 68% of the property is encumbered by wetlands with approximately 8 acres designated as a wetlands bank. The objective of the project is to protect the wetlands – and thus protect improved water quality, floodplains and flooding resilience, protect the ecological integrity along the Elizabeth River, and provide recreation opportunities and public waterfront access. |
