Recreation Oriented Grants

The Land and Water Conservation Fund State and Local Assistance Program

This 1965 act established a federal reimbursement program for the acquisition and/or development of public outdoor recreation areas. Since the LWCF began, Virginia has received more than $76 million in Fall trail shot.assistance that has made more than 400 projects possible. The LWCF is a 50-50 percent matching reimbursement program. Learn more about the Land and Water Conservation Fund.

Recreational Trails Program

The Recreational Trails Program is a matching reimbursement program for building and rehabilitating trails and trail facilities and land acquisition for trail projects. The Federal Highway Administration provides the program's funding. Learn more about Virginia Recreational Trails Program.

Trail Access Grants

The Trail Access Grants program is a 100% reimbursement program for trail projects that increase access to trail opportunities for people with disabilities. Funding for the program comes from Virginia tax payer donations of all or portions of their income tax returns to the Open Space Conservation and Recreation Fund. Future grant rounds are pending accumulation of contributions to the fund. Learn more about the Trail Access Grants program.

Battlefield Land Acquisition Grants

American Battlefield Protection Program Battlefield Land Acquisition Grants are provided by the National Park Service to assist in the preservation of eligible Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and Civil War battlefield lands through acquisition of fee-simple or less-than-fee (easement) interests. Learn more about the Battlefield Land Acquisition Grant program .

Virginia Land Conservation Foundation

The foundation was established to help fund permanent conservation easements and to purchase open spaces and parklands, lands of historic or cultural significance, farmlands and forests, and natural areas. State agencies, local governments, public bodies and registered (tax-exempt) nonprofit groups are eligible to receive matching grants from the foundation. The purpose of the foundation is to provide state funding used to conserve certain categories of special land. Those categories are open spaces and parks, natural areas, historic areas, and farmland and forest preservation. Learn more about the Virginia Land Conservation Foundation.
