Leesylvania is along the tidal portion of the Potomac River in northern Virginia. Migrant species take advantage of the river shoreline, surrounding woods and field habitat.

Best places in the park to observe

Popular birding locations in the park include the picnic area, which is adjacent to the Potomac River as well as along Lee's Woods, Bushey Point, and Powells Creek trails. Ospreys nest in warm weather months in established sites near the fishing pier and boat launch area. Leesylvania is one site frequently used as part of the Christmas Bird Count.

Special birding programs and events

The park offers basic birding programs, including a recurring Osprey Observation guided program on weekends and a guided Night Owl Hike periodically throughout the year. There is also a self-guided "eBirding at Leesylvania" program.
