Beach Area
When
Feb. 1, 2025. 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
In honor of Groundhog Day join a ranger-led walk to determine if spring has arrived. 'Whistle Pig' is a nickname for groundhogs and other marmots.
This time of February is considered by many cultures world-wide as a time of renewal. In Europe, some cultures traditionally honor the period mid-way between the winter solstice and the vernal equinox as the beginning of spring. Many Asian cultures welcome a new year based on lunar cycles beginning in late winter. The earth begins to breath deeper after a winter rest, and much of nature along with it.
Will you see your shadow? The walk will be about two miles over moderately level terrain with some inclines as we search for subtle changes in forest life that reflect the season. Part of the walk will be on a dry path near a marshy area to celebrate World Wetland Day. After the walk, we can warm up by a fire on the beach.
For walking and travel safety reasons, the program will not be held in the event of icy precipitation or ground conditions.
