Plant this, not that

By Emi EndoPosted October 29, 2024

Did something in your yard end up on DCR’s updated invasive plant species list?

Swap in a Virginia native plant and you’ll be supporting local wildlife and biodiversity.

Experts at Virginia’s Soil and Water Conservation Districts have suggestions for replacing invasive trees, shrubs and other plants with Virginia native species.

The state’s invasive plant list now includes 13 additional species, including the following four, shown next to a native alternative.

Buttonbush instead of butterfly-bush

Orange-eye butterfly-bush Buddleja davidii

Invasive: Orange-eye butterfly-bush (Buddleja davidii)

Buttonbush Cephalanthus occidentalis

Native: Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis)

For the Coastal Plain region of Virginia, also consider:Virginia sweetspire (Itea virginica).

Strawberry bush instead of nandina

Nandina (Nandina domestica)
