Virginia river lovers have reasons to celebrate in 2020.
On July 1, six rivers officially were designated as state scenic rivers, following passage of legislation by the General Assembly and signing by Governor Ralph Northam.
The event coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Virginia Scenic Rivers Program.
The program’s intent is to recognize rivers with outstanding scenic, recreational, historical and natural qualities. Since 1970, over 900 miles of Virginia rivers (less than 2%) have been designated as state scenic rivers.
The program is administered by DCR and supported by a network of citizens, localities and organizations across the state.
“This is an exciting year,” said Lynn Crump, program coordinator. “Not only have we added over 110 new river miles — more than any other year in the history of the program — but six new segments in one year surpasses what we thought was possible. Through this program, communities are demonstrating the pride they have in their rivers.”

Clinch River*
Tazewell and Russell counties (36.8 miles)

Albemarle, Buckingham and Fluvanna counties (20 miles)
Maury River
Rockbridge County (19.25 miles)
Pound River
Wise and Dickenson counties (17 miles)

Charlotte and Halifax counties (11.5 miles)
