DCR is looking for talented people to fill positions listed below. Unless stated otherwise, you must complete and submit an electronic state application by the job announcement's close date.

Education Specialist I

Interpretive Assistant

Hiring Rate: $13.00 per hour

Twin Lakes State Park is accepting applications for the Interpretive Assistant position!

This position involves working in the Discovery Center with the lead naturalist in developing, planning, marketing and implementing educational programs and activities that focus on the natural and cultural resources at Twin Lakes State Park. Programs will include guided hikes, campfires, children’s programs, wildlife programs, and other environmental education programs. When not conducting programs, incumbent will assist with staffing the Discovery Center, maintenance and upkeep of all interpretive and animal exhibits, equipment and kiosks. Incumbent may be required to perform park-related duties as needed during emergencies, as well as other duties as assigned.

This position is ideal for individuals who are self-motivated, dependable, and capable of working independently as well as part of a team. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have reliable transportation. 
  • Familiarity with conducting research in order to lead successful programs.
  • Must be willing to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills and demonstrate a friendly and outgoing attitude.
  • Comfortable with public speaking and possess proficient communication skills.
  • Must be able to count money, perform daily register transactions, and reconcile register.

Additional Considerations

  • Knowledge of ecological concepts and familiarity with outdoor recreation skills.
  • Prior experience in biology, environmental sciences, education, history, parks and recreation, or wildlife studies.
  • Basic knowledge of Virginia’s flora and fauna and ability to plan, organize, and conduct tours and programs using this knowledge.
  • Familiarity with archery or paddling techniques.

What We Offer

DCR provides the opportunity for wage employees to participate in tax deferred compensation programs, supplemental disability insurances, and supplemental retirement accounts made available through the Commonwealth’s provider network at the employee’s expense. As an employee of State Parks, you will also receive: Free parking or admission to all Virginia State Parks. DCR classified, retired, and wage staff (after six months of service), are entitled to overnight facility discounts such as: Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people. Free camping Sunday night through Thursday night (excluding the night prior to a holiday) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights. All reservations require a two-night minimum. Bunkhouses, camping cabins and yurts are included; one night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount. 

Special Requirements

Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1500 hours from May 1 to April 30. A valid State Driver's License is required to operate a state vehicle or if operating a personal vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the agency. Must be willing to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.

Selected candidate(s) will need to complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. DCR participates in E-Verify.
