DCR is looking for talented people to fill positions listed below. Unless stated otherwise, you must complete and submit an electronic state application by the job announcement's close date.

Hungry Mother State Park is excited to announce the following job opportunity to develop, experiment, and master culinary techniques and expand knowledge of business management with our Special Events team. As a Food Service Ranger, the ideal candidate will work directly under the Enterprise Ranger to plan, set up, and complete special events including catering events to ensure that the highest possible level of customer service is always maintained. The ideal candidate will assist in creation of new dishes and update existing menu items to provide maximum customer satisfaction with visitor experiences. The Food Service Ranger is responsible for the high standard of food quality in storage, preparation, presentation, and distribution of consumable products in the kitchen and dining areas; ensures the highest standard of sanitation and cleanliness possible in all food service, preparation, and storage areas; and knows and uses all safety procedures (as specified in “ServSafe” training) associated with all food services equipment, inventory, ordering supplies, food prep, and customer service. The ideal candidate will be capable of performing a variety of kitchen, catering, and event activities including but not limited to preparing appetizers, entrees, side dishes, and desserts; setting up tables; laundering linens and other kitchen-related items; washing dishes and instruments; regular cleaning of kitchen structures, food prep surfaces, appliances, storage units, and floors; inventory and pre-ordering of required items and supplies for events, meals, maintenance, and cleaning. Food Service Ranger will maintain current SERV Safe certification or must obtain certification within 12 months of employment. Performs, as the occasion requires, any additional duties requested by supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Ability to follow directions and work as a team. 
  • Great verbal and written communication skills.  
  • Must have reliable transportation and valid driver's license. 
  • Flexible availability to work on mandatory workdays including Memorial Day, July Fourth, and Labor Day. Will work various shifts of up to 8 hours a day. 
  • Ability to observe and practice safe food handling practices per ServSafe guidelines.
  • Previous food service experience.
  • Must be able to perform manual labor in outdoor conditions requiring frequent walking, bending, standing, and be capable of lifting up to 50 lbs.

Additional Considerations

  • Previous working experience in a park.
  • Valid and current ServSafe certificate holder preferred.
  • Knowledge of business management and supervision principles.

Special Requirements

Must attend mandatory paid training. 

Selected candidate(s) will need to complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. DCR participates in E-Verify.

Employment in all positions within the Virginia State Parks is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a background check including a criminal history record check.

Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for Commonwealth of Virginia benefits (health care, paid leave, etc.) and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.

DCR provides the opportunity for wage employees to participate in tax deferred compensation programs, supplemental disability insurances, and supplemental retirement accounts made available through the Commonwealth’s provider network at the employee’s expense. As an employee of State Parks, you will also receive:

  • Free parking or admission to all Virginia State Parks.
  • DCR classified, retired, and wage staff (after six months of service), are entitled to overnight facility discounts such as:
    • Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.
    • Free camping Sunday night through Thursday night (excluding the night prior to a holiday) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
    • Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights. All reservations require a two-night minimum. Bunkhouses, camping cabins and yurts are included; one night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount.
