Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is the state’s lead conservation agency, and it takes a diverse agency to conserve resources for a diverse commonwealth.

Virginia’s award-winning state park system, a division of DCR, boasts an incredible and diverse array of natural, cultural, historical, and recreational resources including parks in the mountains, on the ocean, on the Chesapeake Bay, on 8 major rivers, on 4 major lakes, 4 rail trails, 3 battlefield sites, and 32 sites listed on the National Historic Registry. Our parks encompass over 75,000 acres, offering campsites, cabins, trails, shorelines, lakes and ponds, international dark sky sites, and over 20,000 educational programs and workshops each year.

DCR is hiring! Join us in preserving what people care about most – access to the outdoors, natural habitats, open spaces, clean water, and safe infrastructure. Douthat State Park is accepting applications for an Assistant Park Manager.

In this position, you will:

  • Provide enterprise and concessions management for Douthat State Park, including food services, merchandise, conference center facilities, and recreation equipment rental program.
  • Manage the park's business administration, finances, visitor experience, volunteers, personnel, and community relations.
  • Lead business and marketing initiatives.
  • Will assist with routine park operations, including procurement of goods and services, budgeting, developing and providing staff training, engaging with the community, and other duties as assigned.
  • In the absence of the Park Manager, the Assistant Park Manager has direct responsibility to ensure and maintain continuity of operations and adherence to the goals and objectives of the park and division.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Work history, which demonstrates experience and knowledge of personnel management/supervision, and work experience providing staff training.  
  • Experience performing duties related to revenue collection/reporting, and financial/budget tracking.  
  • Experience, which demonstrates the ability to communicate orally to provide customer service to external and internal stakeholders, and work experience that demonstrates the ability to communicate in writing to complete business correspondence, reports, and other similar documents.  
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license or ability to obtain one by the start of employment.  
  • Experience in managing/tracking sales; performing procurement transactions, credit card purchases; coordinating inventory tracking and loss prevention management; and assisting with activities that promote marketing and the increase of revenue for enterprise operations.
  • Experience operating and managing Point-of-Sale (POS)  cash register/credit card machines to conduct sales transactions; utilizes reservation software to make reservations as needed.  

Additional Considerations

  • Previous experience managing activities for special events, such as obtaining permits, program planning/scheduling, working with partners to acquire funding and to market events, and acts as a primary point of contact for event facility reservations and performs or ensures event staffing and facility cleanliness before and after events.
  • Considerable experience and/or education/training in one or more of the following areas: budget management, procurement procedures, supervision of employees, park/recreational operations, food service management, and management of natural/cultural resources.
  • Considerable experience with managing and maintaining cultural and natural resources of the park; performs civic/community outreach, and supervision and oversight for interpretive and volunteer programs.  
  • Previous work experience in parks and recreation or similar environment.

This is a Non-Law Enforcement position, and park housing will not be provided. The position requires shift work, which includes weekends and holidays.

Selected candidate(s) for positions within Virginia State Parks will be required to satisfactorily complete a criminal history background check. A valid Virginia Driver's License is required to operate a state vehicle or if operating a personal vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the agency.

  • Free parking or admission to all Virginia State Parks.
  • DCR classified, retired, and wage staff (after six months of service) are entitled to overnight facility discounts such as:
    • Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.
    • Free camping Sunday night through Thursday night (excluding the night prior to a holiday) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
    • Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights. All reservations require a two-night minimum. Bunkhouses, camping cabins, and yurts are included; one night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount.
