Sweet Run State Park is accepting applications for the Interpretive Ranger position.
Job Summary
We are seeking a qualified individual to provide meaningful educational opportunities and experiences for park guests by interpreting the significance of the park's natural and cultural resources. The Interpretive Ranger is responsible for researching, developing, and conducting formal and informal interpretive and education-based programs; researching and writing interpretive media; and coordinating school programs, special interpretive events, and self-guided interpretive opportunities.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Assists with maintaining knowledge and records of the park’s natural and cultural resources.
- Coordinates volunteers for interpretive programs and seeks/fosters partnerships for interpretive programming, workshops, and lectures.
- Develop the Annual Interpretive Plan; maintain program databases and attendance tracking; and perform program and event marketing including the coordination of outreach events.
- May serve as first point of contact for visitors at welcome stations.
- Availability to work weekends, holidays, and some evenings.
Minimum Qualifications
- Able to organize and conduct nature and history-based programs for all ages.
- Possess effective verbal and written communication skills to interact with diverse audiences.
- Knowledge and/or experience with Virginia natural and cultural resources.
Additional Considerations
- Knowledge or experience in Environmental Science, Biology, History, Public History, Resource Management, Parks and Recreation or similar areas.
- Experience planning and conducting educational programs.
- Experience supervising or leading volunteers and/or employees.
Special Instructions
Must possess a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Background Check: Employment in all Virginia State Parks positions is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check.
- Employment Eligibility: Selected candidates must complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. DCR participates in E-Verify.
- Driver’s License Requirement: A valid State Driver's License is required if operating a state or personal vehicle for agency business.
- Work Requirements: Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.

- Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.
- Free camping Sunday night through Thursday night (excluding the night prior to a holiday) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
- Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights. All reservations require a two-night minimum. Bunkhouses, camping cabins and yurts are included; one night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount.
