Hiring Range: $75,000 - $85,000

Job Duties:

This position assists Dam Safety Engineers in providing regulatory reviews, support, and assistance to dam owners and consulting engineers using sound engineering principles to ensure compliance with regulations. This position, stationed in Richmond, Virginia, will serve the Commonwealth Virginia. In the role, the selected candidate will:

  • Fulfill the agency’s mission to protect lives and property.
  • Assist Dam Safety Engineers in conducting and reviewing safety inspections, issuing operation and maintenance certificates, construction and alteration permits, monitoring construction and alteration activities, and ensuring technical documents meet regulatory standards in accordance with Code of Virginia.
  • Assist Dam Safety Engineers in developing or reviewing dam break inundation studies, emergency plans and dam database support functions.
  • Participate in public engagement with state, local, federal, and community partners and is a team player in the delivery of relevant training, technical assistance, outreach, and education awareness messaging across the Commonwealth.

The incumbent of this position may also staff an emergency operations center in Virginia during emergencies and will participate in dam-related emergency drills and exercises.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience with, and knowledge and implementation of engineering principles of hydrology, hydraulics, soils, foundations, dam design, construction and maintenance, and the development and review of dam breach parameters.
  • Ability to accurately interpret and apply law and regulations in their daily work.
  • Experience communicating effectively, both orally and in writing, and able to assist Dam Safety Engineers prepare presentations, work products, and reviews.
  • Experience with hydraulic and hydrologic modeling software such as that developed by the Corps of Engineers.
  • Experience with GIS, word processing, spreadsheet, database, Python, and presentation systems/software.
  • Possess a degree from an engineering program of four years or more accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (EAC/ABET) or a degree from an engineering master's or doctoral program accredited by EAC/ABET, or meet the requirements of the NCEES Engineering Education Standard in order to attain the engineer-in-training designation.

Additional Considerations:

  • Experience working with state or federal dam safety agencies as an employee.
  • Experience working for a dam operator or consulting engineering company in an engineering role.
