Department of Conservation and Recreation to conduct prescribed burn in Southampton County, Va.

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation plans to conduct a prescribed burn near Courtland, Va., in Southampton County as early as Jan. 10.

The 175-acre property, owned by the Cheroenhaka (Nottoway) Indian Tribal Heritage Foundation and managed in partnership with DCR as part of Cypress Bridge Swamp Natural Area Preserve, is located on the south side of Route 58 near the intersection with Route 58 Business.

Weather conditions will dictate the exact date between Jan. 10 and Feb. 10. The burn is expected to last several hours.

Depending on wind direction, residents and travelers in these areas may see or smell smoke. Smoke may linger in the area. People in and passing through the area can also expect to see visible flames, fire personnel in bright yellow shirts and fire engines and support vehicles.

DCR fire specialists, the Virginia Department of Forestry, the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources and others manage some public lands through the careful and intentional use of prescribed fire, known as “good fire,” to improve habitat for native wildlife and reduce the risk of wildfire for the public. Prescribed fire also benefits fire-dependent native vegetation communities and ecosystems, such as the longleaf pine forest, which is being restored on this land.
