Virginia's State Trails Advisory Committee

The State Trails Advisory Committee (the Committee) was established with the passing of House Bill 1542 (2015) creating § 10.1-204.1 of the Code of Virginia. The committee of the Department of Conservation and Recreation objective is to assist the Commonwealth in developing and implementing a statewide system of attractive, sustainable, connected and enduring trails for the perpetual use and enjoyment of the citizens of the Commonwealth and future generations. The Committee meets at least twice each calendar year.

If you are interested in reviewing previous committee meeting notes, you can do so by searching Virginia Town Hall using the search function and the keyword "trails". You can also use the “Sign In” feature to register as a public user which allows you to sign up for email notification of regulatory actions and meetings.

No later than October 1 of each year, through the calendar year 2027 (as amended by HB 886, 2020), DCR will provide a status report on the work of the Committee to Chairman of the House Committee on Agriculture, Chesapeake and Natural Resources; the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Conservation and Natural Resources; and the Chairman and members of the Virginia delegation to the Chesapeake Bay Commission.

In 2009, the Greenways and Trails Task Force developed a statewide trail action plan. The plan covers working with local partners to develop statewide "trunkline" trails that form the framework for connecting regional and community trails.
