USGS National Digital Trails Project
This project will create a national GIS trail data schema that can be utilized by all agencies and partners to establish a unifying and common trail GIS data structure (local and National Trails).

State Trails Data
In 2008, the Center for Geospatial Engineering at Virginia Tech produced an interactive map of the existing trail and bicycle route infrastructure in Virginia, funded by the Virginia Department of Transportation. This inventory was taken from existing plans and from GIS data supplied by the regions and localities. This data, while not authoritative, has been added to over time and is available for download to use at your own risk at VDCR’s Trails Collaboration Page.
The creation and maintenance of a trails layer that can be used for tourism purposes has not been funded, but local and regional government Web sites promoting trails are linked under the Local Trails page of this Web site.
