Check Research Permit Application status

Permits are issued subject to the following terms

  1. The permittee must notify the appropriate Natural Area Region Steward 1week prior to undertaking any permitted activity.
  2. All collections will be made in a judicious manner, altering the natural conditions as little as possible, collecting as few specimens as possible. All project materials (e.g., flagging, stakes, or other markers/monuments) must be removed at the conclusion of the research. To protect sensitive resources, DCR-DNH may restrict proposed collection parameters.
  3. All collecting must be done away from roads, trails, and developed areas unless such locations are identified in the permit.
  4. The collections shall be used for scientific or educational purposes only, shall be dedicated to the public benefit, and shall not be used for commercial profit.
  5. All collecting shall be done in accordance with federal, state, and local laws. All other applicable permits or consents must accompany this application.
  6. All assistants/observers must be under the direct supervision of the permittee or sub-permittee at all times.
  7. A comprehensive final report, or progress report, will be furnished to the appropriate regional steward and the Natural Areas Science Coordinator no later than one year after the issuance of a permit. Reports shall summarize the research activities, present and synthesize data collected, and interpret and discuss these results. The inclusion of tables, figures, and photographs is encouraged. Reports must also include the type, number, and disposition of all collected material.
  8. In the event that the research leads to publication, DCR-DNH shall be furnished with a final copy of the manuscript or report.
  9. Permittee and sub-permittee(s) shall and hereby do waive and release any and all claims against the Commonwealth of Virginia, Department of Conservation and Recreation, or its employees, for any and all damages, losses, or costs to persons or property arising either directly or indirectly from the use of said premises and/or from the exercise of the privileges granted by this permit.
  10. Permittee and sub-permittee(s) shall abide by all DCR regulations and agree to exercise privileges granted in the permit subject to the supervision of the Regional Natural Area Preserve Steward.

Additional stipulations and conditions may be included on the issued permit.
